Annual Spring Volunteer Project!

Please note:  For this year the volunteer project has already been held.   BANSG recruits local nannies to volunteer for this project every year, providing childcare during a Saturday conference at Perkins School for the Blind in Watertown, held near the end of April or in early May.  Please consider joining us next year…it’s a lot of fun!

Nanny Support Group- Community Unity Service- Spring 2010

VOLUNTEER, OR ASK FOR FURTHER INFORMATION FOR OUR MAY 1 PROJECT BY EMAILING JANSTCLAIR AT AOL DOT COM!   PLEASE CONTACT ME ASAP, AS ORGANIZERS ARE ASSIGNING REGISTERED CHILDREN BY VOLUNTEER PREFERENCE/EXPERIENCE LEVEL.  CORI checks are not being run after all, as volunteers will always be within view of CORI’d staff and head counsellors.

This spring, nanny groups nationwide will each run a volunteer project for member nannies.   By participating we do good for the community we live in, combat bad press normally given to nannies, and demonstrate that the nanny profession means individuals who are responsible and community-minded.

As of March 9, 2010, there are several groups that have arranged projects:

Perkins School for the Blind

Watertown, MA

May 1st, 8am-3:15pm

BANSG will provide childcare during the yearly regional conference held at the Perkins School for the Blind for parents of visually impaired preschoolers. We are counselors for the day in a well-organized “camp” for the impaired children and their sighted siblings.

Our participation allows parents of an impaired child to learn hope and strategies for raising and educating a blind or visually impaired (often multi-impaired) child, and to meet and talk with other parents who are meeting the same challenges.  It is not unusual that we are the first people these parents have ever been able to trust to care for their handicapped child, and that this conference marks their first hours away from focusing on the direct care of their child!

Volunteers, if they wish, may request their preferred age group, and request to be assigned either a handicapped child or 1-2 unimpaired children.   The children are divided into age groups running between infant-preteen, and each group has their own experienced head counsellor and base site with craft and baking materials.   There are large playgrounds, spacious grounds, a well-stocked gym, music and movement activities, and facepainting.   Counsellors and kids have a grand time!   I’ve been doing this for almost 25 years as the ongoing head counsellor for the 3-4yo’s if you want to request my group!

Again, please contact me at janstclair at aol dot com asap for further information, or to sign up.
