**********SESSION INFORMATION**********

In order of appearance in the schedule:

*

-How to Nail Down a Great Nanny-Family Contract:

Nannies need to be their own advocates, and make sure that their needs are covered in a written work agreement.  This session covers the basic items that should be included, as well as how and when to present them to your  employers.  Also covered: meshing your unique needs with those of your employers, so there is a balance between what each gives and receives in compensation.

***************

-Ins and Outs of Becoming an Infant Specialist

This session covers where to receive infant specialty training, expected time and costs involved, and the plusses and minuses of working as an infant specialist.

What is a Baby Nurse (or Infant Specialist)?

Formerly known as Baby Nurses, Infant Specialists, or Newborn Specialists, are not medically trained nurses at all. They are individuals, often times nannies, with an exceptional knowledge of infant care. Due to controversy in the nursing field and ensuing legal repercussions, there has been a global movement to “rename” individuals in the infant care field, identifying such people as specialists. Common duties for an Infant Specialist include; feeding, burping, bathing, scheduling, swaddling, diapering, breast-feeding support, cord and circumcision cleaning, implementing and teaching sleep soothing techniques, and educating, encouraging and empowering postpartum moms (and dads).

*************************

Cloudy with a Chance of NO!:

Little kids are full of love and affection, that’s what we love about them. But when they dig in their heels they really challenge our ability to stay calm and think creatively.  Caregivers wonder what to  do, when to draw the line, or if they should just ignore a behavior.  We discuss strategies to stay in control without being “controlling” as you keep your day moving along.

****************************

“Working with the Parents: How to Tell Somebody Something They’d Rather Not Hear”

Bummed by bad behaviors?   Tired of tantrums?  What if we are talking about the parents?!  Sometimes dealing with the children in your care is the easy part.  Working with “adults” who are prone to their impulsive behaviors and irrational tantrums while running your business is hard.  This session will focus on working with parents of the kids in your care.  Bring questions, scenarios, and issues with the “adults” and we will look at the best way to tell someone something they might not want to hear.

*****************************

Connections Count: An Introduction to CSEFEL (the Social-Emotional Foundations of Early Learning):

This 90 minute session will present the crucial role that Social-Emotional Development plays as the foundation for all learning for children. Specific strategies that enhance social connections and foster resilience that can be used in all settings with children will be shared.

******************************

STRESS MANAGEMENT FOR NANNIES:

(Please take a breath and relax as we wait for the session description…but doesn’t the title say it all?)

********************************

Strategies for Successful Nanny – Parent Communication:

Working in the home of one’s employer sets the stage for a most unique professional relationship, dynamic and in some cases, disaster. This workshop will focus on  developing key communication skills that will help you successfully navigate every stage of the relationship and maintain your professionalism, authenticity, clarity and success.

*********************************

Unwinding Wound Up Kids and Wakeful Babies Using Neurologically-based Practical Methods:

Learn how to recognize what sensory experiences wind children up, and learn how to plan easy games that calm them back down. In this session participants will learn how to modify the environment for relaxation and sleep, and explore “sensory diet games” used to improve focus and attention.  (A sensory diet is activities that give needed input to the senses.)

***********************************

Prepping for What’s Behind Door #3: A Professional Childcare Provider’s Guide to Working with Jet-setting, High Profile Hotel Clients as well as Average Local Long-term Families.

This session will address such topics as:

  • Creating a Childcare Provider Profile or Portfolio (temp & long-term)
    1. Learning how to market your strengths to potential employers.
    2. Exploring appropriate vs. inappropriate profile material.
    3. Getting creative but keeping it professional.
    4. Streamlining your marketability via the web.
    5. Resume Do’s and Don’ts
    6. Making the final cut.
    7. Earning what you are worth!
  • Interview Strategies: Agencies & Families (temp & long-term)
    1. Discovering that everyday is a job interview.
    2. Discussing the 4 P’s: Personality, Presentation, Professionalism and Punctuality.
    3. Learning that there is a Family for every Nanny and a Nanny for every Family.
  • Strategic Alliances: Agencies/Hotels/Families
    1. Hotels: you wouldn’t believe what they expect…
    2. Families: they want me to do what?
    3. Understanding the need for flexibility, tolerance and a sense of adventure!
  • Sidebar
    1. Nanny Taxes: Advice for Staying Legal (temp & long-term)

EASY WAYS NANNIES CAN HELP!

We need nannies who use social networking sites, Twitter, Facebook, etc., to promote our conference, our sponsors, and our speakers!   I’m pretty new to social networking, so some of you may have ideas to share.   Here’s what I know you can do to help:

Use FACEBOOK to become a “fan of”, or “like” both NANNYPALOOZA BOSTON and the businesses who are supporting us, or “follow” them on Twitter.  The more fans and following the businesses have, the higher their consumer rating will be, and their business will benefit.

If you have used these businesses, and have good stories to share about them, consider posting them where appropriate.

And if you patronize them in the future, be sure to mention that you appreciate their support of Nannypalooza Boston, so they’ll know that helping us was a win-win decision.

===============================

==================================================================

NANNYPALOOZA has been the annual national nanny conference held by the NANC (National Association for Nanny Care) for four years, first in Philadelphia, and most recently, in Washington, DC.

BANSG and MAPN will be involved in putting on NANNYPALOOZA BOSTON during the weekend of Sept. 17-19, as part of NANC’s NANNIES ACROSS AMERICA and National Nanny Recognition Week.   Eighteen nanny conferences will definitely be happening across the country this same weekend under the umbrella of NANC, and four more possible hosts are being explored!   This creates a great opportunity for nannies across the country who have never connected with other nannies, or had professional development opportunities, to experience both in an easy, local, affordable conference.   And holding many simultaneous conferences provides a great opportunity for positive national press for nannies, and wide publicity for the businesses supporting the many conferences.  It’s a win-win-win situation!

==============================================================

SOCIAL EVENTS:

We will host a Saturday evening outing, and dinner out in Kendall Square after the Sunday conference!

Our Sunday Night Social Event is all set!  We’ll be hosting right after the conference (about 6pm) at the cambridge brewing company.   It’s a short walk away from the conference site in Kendall Square.   It’s big, there is outdoor patio seating, lots of pool tables, plenty of space for everyone who wants to come, and lots of fun

===================================================================

REGISTRATION:  See link at top of page!

We are limited by space to 120 attendees.

===================================================================

CHARITIES:  All proceeds after conference expenses will be donated to nonprofit organizations serving nannies and children in Massachusetts. Our children’s charity:  ”REACH OUT AND READ” at the Martha Eliot Health Center, Boston.  (See information below)

Part of the proceeds from the conference will be used directly to fund future educational events for nannies in Massachusetts via MAPN.   For more information on MAPN, the Mass. Alliance of Professional Nannies, please visit www.mapnannies.wordpress.com.

Reach Out and Read (ROR) is a national non-profit organization that promotes early literacy by giving new books to children in pediatric exam rooms across the nation, and advice to parents about the importance of reading aloud. Reach Out and Read (ROR) programs make early literacy a standard part of pediatric primary care. Physicians and nurses advise parents that reading aloud is the most important thing they can do to help their children love books, develop language, and to start school ready to learn.  Health care providers talk with parents about the value and enjoyment of reading books to babies and young children. Each time a child ages 6 months to 5 years comes to the clinic for a well-child visit, he or she receives a new, high quality, developmentally appropriate book to take home and enjoy with parents and caregivers. Approximately, 1500 children per year are given books through this program at Martha Eliot Health Center.

BRING CHILDREN’S BOOKS TO DONATE AT NANNYPALOOZA!

Although we are donating half of any Nannypalooza Boston proceeds to Children’s Hospital’s “Reach Out and Read” program, they can always use more books!   So please plan to bring a new children’s book to donate.   There will be boxes for book donations at the registration area.

==============================

===================================================================

Conference updates will be posted here as they become available.  Please save the dates (Sept. 18 evening-19, 2010) and get ready for our local NANNYPALOOZA!

Saturday evening social event,  Sunday dinner out after the conference!

Sunday all-day conference (10am-5pm), two-to-three tracks so there will be a choice of sessions to attend.
